Congressman Ellison Joins with Minnesotans to Send Books to Somalia

June 25, 2013

MINNEAPOLIS -- This year, Congressman Keith Ellison put out a call to supporters asking for their help to reestablish the Mogadishu Public Library. Congressman Ellison set a goal to send a 40 foot container with 22,000 books to the people of Mogadishu. On Monday June 24, that container was placed on a ship bound for Somalia.

“The gateway to opportunity is education. After returning from Somalia earlier this year, I reached out to supporters for help in sending thousands of books to the people of Mogadishu. Thanks to their contributions, 22,000 books are now on their way to Somalia. My campaign has always been about the politics of generosity and inclusion, and I am so proud that we were able to step up and support the people of Somalia in this critical time in their history.”

Congressman Ellison represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, home to the largest Somali population in the United States. In February, Congressman Ellison became the first Member of Congress to travel to Somalia since it was formally recognized by the United States this year. While visiting, he met with Somali President Hassan Sheik Mohamoud, who asked for assistance in restocking the Mogadishu Public Library with the books needed to educate future generations of Somalis.
