Rep. Keith Ellison (MN-05) released the following statement after the GOP-controlled state Legislature passed a constitutional amendment to require photo ID to vote in Minnesota elections:

“At the time of America’s founding, only white males 21 years of age or older who owned property could participate in our democracy.

Since that time, our nation has always moved to include more Americans in the electoral process. This amendment does just the opposite.

The Republicans’ ALEC-backed photo ID amendment will turn over 700,000 Minnesotans’ constitutional right to vote into a privilege. That amount of people would fill Target Field over 17 times. It’s clear that photo ID represents a startling departure from America’s proud tradition of expanding the franchise.

I will run a vigorous, grassroots campaign to educate Minnesotans about photo ID’s dangerous consequences and maximize voter turnout in the Fifth District. Our campaign plans to turn out 20,000 new voters in 2012 and make a huge impact on this statewide measure.”
